SEANNA WONG

On Wednesday, January, 29th, 2020, students and faculty had the fortune to hear and attend a long and proud discussion seminar on the North Park University campus. The discussion/conversation was presented by North Park University’s Public Services Supervisor, Seanna Wong; a young Jamaican female writer, essayist, and blogger at the age of 23 talks about racism, religion, and womanhood within not only in her own life, but in the lives of people in America today.

Seanna’s Writing

From a young age, Ms. Wong knew that she wanted to write and to become a writer. Her writing began in her early days of Elementary school where she would find herself scolded by her teachers for writing at inappropriate times during class times; even as she get older, she has kept a series of journals from middle school, until now. But, her teacher’s scolding did not last long when they presented her parents a copy of her work that she accidentally turned in as homework, and they became mesmerized just like the teachers and saw that she had a great talent.

Her inspiration came in many different shapes and forms. Be it her being surrounded by her family, or her mother constantly reading in her when she was young, her lover for writing didn’t waver with time, it continued to grow massive in size. And what better way to express her writing is through her own personal love of performing in the theater. She says, ”To me writing is about letting it out, while performing is a way to show it, but it can take a lot out of you.” Performing to her is the ultimate expression of writing because you can act out what you write or what other wrote, to make it more real. But, for Seanna, writing isn’t all fun and game to her only.

She has many different ideas on what to write and how to write it, but she faces difficulty. Seanna wants to publish her books and ideas, but finds herself facing unfair obstacles and convictions on what she should write, and that has left her worried and upset about her writing process from start to finish.

After meeting Seanna at one of North Park University’s reading seminar, people can see that she is true writer with many different traits and understanding on how it must be to publish something the public will like and not take offense by. Young winter and authors today can learn something from Seanna and experiences.

”Write even when you don’t want to!” – Seanna Wong
